What to Bring for a Successful Hunt

At the Bretting Texan Ranch all you need is your weapon of choice, a large ice chest and a valid Texas hunting license. We take care of the rest! Not only do we offer top-of-the-line hospitality services, but we also take on complete trophy care. Our all-inclusive services at the ranch include full trophy care like field dressing, caping, and quartering of meat for convenient transportation home.

Here’s a typical gear list for hunting at the Ranch, which ensures you are well-prepared for various types of hunts, including trophy whitetail deer, hog, and exotic game hunts. This list includes essential items for comfort, safety, and effectiveness during your hunting trip:

Clothing and Footwear

  • Camouflage Clothing: Lightweight for early season, heavier layers for colder months.

  • Insulated Jacket and Pants: For cold weather hunts.

  • Snake-proof Hunting Boots: Snakeproof, waterproof, and comfortable for long treks. We highly reccomend at the minimum wearing snake boots.

  • Hat and Gloves: Camouflage or neutral colors to blend with the environment.

Hunting Equipment

  • Weapon of Choice:

    • Rifle: Appropriate caliber for the game you are hunting (Larger calibers for big game).

    • Bow/Crossbow: With appropriate draw weight and arrows.

    • Handgun: 357 caliber and above

  • Ammunition/Arrows: Sufficient quantity for the duration of your hunt.

  • Scope or Sights: Properly zeroed for accuracy. (We can check this when you get to the Ranch. We have a 50-, 100-, and 200-yard range.)

  • Binoculars: For spotting game from a distance.

  • Rangefinder: To accurately gauge distance to your target.

Additional Gear

  • Flashlight/Headlamp: With extra batteries.

  • Game Calls: Specific to the species you are hunting.

  • Scent Control: Scent eliminator sprays and scent-blocking clothing.

  • Snake Boots: Protection against venomous snakes common in some areas of Texas.

  • Cooler: For storing meat after a successful hunt

Optional but Useful Items

  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.

  • Bug Repellent: To protect against insects.

  • Rain Gear: Waterproof jacket and pants.

Safety and Legal Requirements

  • Hunting License and Tags: As required by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

  • Hunter Safety Course Certification: If required.
